Rock´n´Roll - Reports

The Winners of the World Championship 2000

They made it once more:

Beate and Andreas Wolf are World Champions 2000!

A report from the World Championships 2000
in Mannheim

(deutsche Version)

They wanted to know if they could...

Mannheim, September 2nd, 2000, that was the date Beate and Andreas Wolf were working for in the last Months. Shortly before midnight they had reached their aim - they were standing at the top of the winners stairs in the Rosengarten Congess Center in Mannheim. Ago in 1998 they had planned to end their Rock´n´Roll career with the World Championships in Berlin. But the fact that they did not win that WC only on their iwn fault did not let them come to rest as it seems. So they decided to try it once more, to do all the training for a World Championship - and this time they made it. So this should be the last step in their active participation in Rock´n´Roll - last not least for their child.

High standard in Mannheim

The overall standard of the 29 couples competing in Mannheim was, from our point of view, quite high. Dancing and acrobatics of most of the couples was not only safe and well done, but also full of new ideas - which was not the case at all championships we have seen.

Short Program now part of the World Championships

As it was at the European Championships and the Masters, the short program is now part of the World Championships also. In Mannheim they couples had to perform a tie, a salto forward, a salto backward and a single dive. As was said at the press conference, "duty" is something germans are always good at - and therefore nobody will be astonished that the Wolfs were the clear winners of the Short Program.

Bedretdinova and Bardanov very strong

Best couples besides Beate and Andreas Wolf were the spanisch couples Monica Martinez/David Felip and Martha Ventura/José Tornero. Another very good couple cam from russia, Dinara Bedretdinova and Andrej Bardanov. They did a footwork with much tempo and lots of fantasy. Their acrobatics are as well done and safe as they always were, and Dinara must have a very good view from up there (if she only had the time to look around). A shadow was thrown on the finals by an accident Martha Ventura had in the acrobatics round. Very quickly after she fell on the neck there was medical stuff on the stage to help her, but nobody made any effort to shield the stage from the audience, so the audience had the chance to (or it had to) watch the whole action. After the competition we talked to David Felip, an he told us that Martha did not have any serious injuries.

Dancing all around

29 couples from 15 nations had come to Mannheim to compete for the World Championships. As the WC was held at the same time as the German Open Championships Standard and Latin dances, the hall of the WC was full of people even in the early afternoon. The whole Rosengarten Congress Center was full of dancers, everywhen was action and movement, large parts of the Rosengarten were occupied as dressing-room, their were lots of information desks and shops selling dance equipment. We think that the World Championships did get profit from this coexistance, because many standard and latin dancers took the chance to have a look at this "very odd" kind of dancesport (as seen from their point of view). Well, guess how we could tell who was a standard or latin dancer in the Rock´n´Roll audience! The evening event was well attended to. About 1200 people in the audience filled most of the hall. It was a good audience, and especially the german couples must have been happy about all the fans that were helping them quite loud.

Contrast program: Lindy Hop

As a contrast program for the Rock´n´Roll the finals of the German Championships Lindy Hop were held this evening, too. Each of the 6 competing couples danced a slow and a fast round.
